Why are blog directories important to authors? Well, beyond the obvious need to get your own blog listed in as many directories as are relevant to helping you find your audience, blog directories are fabulous places to find other blogs where your community of readers are hanging out. It’s no secret that finding like-minded bloggers offers you the chance to interact, exchange blogs, and increase your own social footprint.
So now, a shout-out to a great favorite online resource for finding blog directories: MasterNewMedia.org’s Best Blog Directory and RSS Submission Sites. If you’re looking to get your blog listed or to find other blogs related to your platform, this is the place to start!
The RSSTop55 is updated weekly. All the directories are briefly reviewed so you can judge its value as a fit to your work. Both free and paid directories are listed.
When you go searching for directories on which to list your blog, be ready to supply information you’ll need to provide, including:
- Blog URL (including the http://)
- Blog feed address
- Blog title
- A brief description of your blog
- Blog categories and keywords
Our own favorite blog directories include Technorati.com and Alltop.com, great resources for information and both require approval to be listed, which increases their credibility, and the cred of the sites they include!
Have a favorite blog directory you’d like to share with other authors? Share it with our readers!

Thanks for this resource! It’s so important to get your blog tour going as an author.
I recently stumbled upon Google’s page rank checker (10 is the most used)
http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php
After a couple of guest blog posts to help promote my memoir, Adopted Reality, I wanted to see which blogs get the most traffic. I’m using this to help me decide where to concentrate my blog tour efforts.
Does anyone else have any experience with sorting among the tens of thousands of blogs and deciding where to focus one’s efforts?
Laura
Hi Laura — the page rank tool I like most for our clients is Alexa’s toolbar, which can be easily installed on Firefox, Chrome and IE — it’s a great initial indicator of where a site ranks among 30 million ranked sites — and you can click on the little “a” to get more in-depth analysis on other sites, their influence, who’s linking to them, etc. This proves valuable if you’ve gotten a Google alert for instance and you visit the site to comment — if it doesn’t have a great ranking, you can definitely weigh the investment of time in interacting there… Thanks for the great question and will likely blog about this topic in more depth in the near future. Write on!
Thanks for the great list of directories, some I already knew, but quite a few I didn’t so I will be investigating them. I am a Virtual Assistant and Online Book Marketing Specialist from the UK working with authors to promote their books so I am always looking for new opportunities to increase the reach of their work.
Technorati is probably one of my favourites too. BritBlog.com is launching again later this year so may be worth a look too if you have authors particularly interested in the UK market.

(Thanks too for helping me discover the free photos site!)
Wonderful Sarah and glad I could be of service. If any of your authors ever need assistance setting up websites, visit our info page on that at https://writerswin.com/services/websitesblogs/. We make it so they can easily manage themselves or put it in the hands of a virtual assistant such as yourself!
And yes, the photo site has proved quite useful — there’s another too, http://www.stockphotosforfree.com/ though haven’t seen as many illustrations there. Enjoy the day! Shari
