Zuckerberg-book-clubYou know we’re big on book clubs around here — it’s one of the keystones of our Winner Circle, after all. Book clubs, along with book reviewers, are key influencers in getting the word out to more people about our words.

So we were excited to see that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has started an online book club on his social media site, challenging users to read a new book every two weeks.

“My challenge for 2015 is to read a new book every other week,” Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook, “with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies.”

The Facebook mogul said he’s looking forward to delving into more books. “Books allow you to fully explore a topic and immerse yourself in a deeper way than most media today,” he wrote.

mark-zuckerberg-starts-book-clubZuckerberg has started a Facebook page called “A Year of Books” to document his reading and enable other users to join the book club. The January 2 post states: “We will read a new book every two weeks and discuss it here. Our books will emphasize learning about new cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies. Suggestions for new books to read are always welcome. We ask that everyone who participates read the books and we will moderate the discussions and group membership to keep us on topic.”

To date, over 212,000 Facebook users have liked the Year of Books page. Whether or not your book makes it to this new uber-book-club, we appreciate the influence Zuckerberg is wielding to encourage social media users to read more books!

And the controversial Facebook CEO may just be this generation’s version of Oprah. The club is already so influential that the paperback version of the first book Zuckerberg chose to read for the group,”The End of Power” quickly sold out on Amazon!

Join the group and watch its ambitious progress – maybe YOUR book has a shot at what will no doubt soon be dubbed “The Zuck Effect,” like the “Oprah Effect” — skyrocketing chosen books to fame and fortune…

    Hi Shari,
Wow! Thanks for keeping us in the loop. This sounds like a great idea. Even if our books aren’t read by Mark, this move certainly promotes reading and is therefore a good thing for authors.
