We’ve discussed it before: Getting your own blog listed in as many directories as are relevant to helping you find your audience earns you more readers and more inbound links to your website. Blog directories are fabulous places to find other blogs where your community of readers are hanging out. It’s no secret that finding like-minded bloggers offers you the chance to interact, exchange blogs, and increase your own social footprint.

Unfortunately there’s no single portal to list your blog everywhere (or magic wand, for that matter). This is one of those tasks that’s going to take a little bit of online elbow grease, though once you’ve registered your blog at a couple directories the process becomes easier.

Here are two great resource articles to get you started on your homework:

Words in a Row: Start with this basic resource page that provides an excellent primer for blog registration.

TopRank’s Best List: Once your feet are wet, venture farther into the water at TopRank’s marketing blog, which has published a very comprehensive list of over 120 free places to list your blog, as well as a limited list of fee-based directories.

When you go searching for directories on which to list your blog, be ready to supply information you’ll need to provide, including:

  • Blog URL (including the http:// and will usually look like this: http://www.XYZAuthor.com/blog)
  • Blog feed address (when you hover over the RSS symbol on your blog your feed should be visible, i.e. http://XYZauthor.com/feed)
  • Your blog’s title
  • A brief description of your blog
  • Blog categories and keywords that will help lead readers to your words

Thanks for the info. I agree with you In regards to registering to as much as possible. It is also good to change the text for the description . I had the best results with blogsynergy.com so far. Other good ones are bloggeries.com and blogcatalog.com

Great idea! And I’ve just listed with BlogNation.com, although it requires that you put a badge on your page. I’m pending approval, but I’ll keep you posted 🙂

Yes, interesting this BlogNation.com — I didn’t see it on other blog directories lists and it may indeed be because of the badge requirement. The badge requirement is definitely great for THEM since it ups their inbound links and definitely increases their traffic. Time will tell if the value is there to authors. We’ve installed one as well so let’s see if there’s a measurable advantage?
